Hello
I wouldn't be able to tell you where cell towers were in 1987 in almost any part of the country. There are two sources though you can check:
1. FCC Antenna Structure Registrations- although I don't know when these started being registered.
2. FCC cellular licenses- cell sites before 1996 were registered individually.

Under Call Sign & Radio Services, select Match only the following radio service(s): Then select CL, then select Geosearch up top and select the address around which you want to search.
As an FYI- this search won't provide remotely complete data after 1996.
